View from the Room: Castle Vale B&B, Berwick-upon-Tweed

Location

Berwick-upon-Tweed is a tiny town just into the English side of the Scottish border and this traditional B&B is right in the middle of it. Or rather to just one side as the car park (and our room) looked out to the stunning Berwick Bridge over the River Tweed.

Parking

  • Included on site and it comes with a view.

  • Access via stairs only.

Room

Our room was huge, filled with dark, antique furniture and complete with creaking floorboards. As with most B&Bs, the feeling was of being in your Aunt’s house who is trying to give your adult privacy while making you feel at home.

With this many furnishings, it does make you very conscious not to break something, a feeling you never really get in a large, bought-in-bulk furnished hotel. (Indeed, there is a charge for breakages, something we don’t see in hotels as accidents happen).

Storage

Double wardrobe and shelf with about 7 assorted hangers. (I have a phobia against wire hangers but I just closed the door and didn’t’ use it; we were only here for one night)
Plenty of other storage units
Good size bedside tables with shelf underneath
Sideboard
Two tier unit that housed kettle and coffee, tea and biscuits
Cupboard in TV unit

Power points: Dotted around the room.

Bathroom

Towels – two bath towels on table. Plus at least one hand towel
Double shower cubicle in place of a bath with a hand held shower
Full sized shampoo and conditioner to use (I didn’t)
Heated towel rail that went off when the heating did

Refreshments

Hot drinks facilities in room
Breakfast made to order plus all the usual cereals eaten on large communal table

Dressing

  • Mirrors in the right places including a full length one

  • Dressing table and a chair

Relax & sleep

  • Two armchairs and coffee table looking out to the view

  • TV on a unit

  • Large double bed with one large winter duvet and 2 pillows plus spares

We had a large room - it was the only one left when we booked - so it took a while to warm up. Heating only comes on at certain times but luckily we had extra heaters in the room as the radiator wasn’t working properly so we had some control on this freezing 1st January night

Lighting: All lamps and overhead light adequate.

Service

Excellent welcome and service throughout. I left my earring there and it was posted back to me before I even realised!
